We’re developing an exciting new school choice for elementary students in Humboldt County’s Eel River Valley.

A safe, caring environment for nurturing curious, independent and community-minded learners.

We believe kids learn best when given opportunities to spark their innate curiosity and engage in meaningful work. The Village School in Ferndale, CA will be guided by Montessori philosophy to nurture students’ independence and self-motivation in an enriching, supportive classroom with small student-teacher ratio.

As an independent “micro-school,” the Village School will have the unique ability to provide hands-on, interest-led learning; a strong emphasis on arts and crafts, science and culture; purposeful community involvement in Ferndale and Humboldt County; and a caring, inclusive environment. What will make us different?

Ferndale’s Village School will emphasize personalized learning, with teachers developing flexible learning plans based on the individual needs, strengths and interests of each child. Students will be able to learn at their own pace, develop self-motivation and critical thinking skills, and engage in relevant, real-life learning, including hands-on projects integrating art, science and math (STEM/STEAM) and integration in the vibrant Ferndale community, from arts to agriculture.

Our collaborative approach to learning and small, supportive environment will make our program unique among Humboldt County elementary schools in Ferndale, Fortuna and the Eel River Valley.

About Montessori

Rather than teaching through rote memorization, textbooks, and tests, the Montessori method uses individually guided, experiential learning to prepare kids for life in the real world, not just a classroom. During the elementary years—ages 6–12—Montessori schools follow a custom-paced curriculum that challenges kids academically while nurturing their well-being and sense of self. Engaging as contributing members of a respectful community, they learn to question, think critically, problem-solve, and take responsibility for their own learning—skills that will support them in later education and in life.

“Our care of the child should be governed, not by the desire to make him learn things, but by the endeavor always to keep burning within him that light which is called intelligence.”

— Maria Montessori
