About Village Montessori School

An Independent Elementary School in Ferndale, CA

We endeavor to develop a private elementary school option in Ferndale, California that will offer an important educational alternative in Humboldt County’s Eel River Valley. As a small independent school, or “micro school,” The Village School will embrace authentic Montessori principles to offer individualized, interest-led learning; an emphasis on arts, science and culture; purposeful community involvement; and a supportive, inclusive environment—all meaningful components of a well-rounded education that the public school system sometimes struggles to meet due to state-mandated constraints.

Because we recognize affordability is a critical consideration in school choice, we are exploring a sliding scale tuition system as well as scholarship opportunities to ensure our school will available to families across all income levels.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to prepare and foster the development of the whole child in a safe and nurturing environment while sparking children’s natural curiosity and their innate love to learn. With a caring teacher guide and hands-on approach to learning, we aim to cultivate a self-disciplined, self-confident, independent, and academically-prepared global citizen who is cognitively, socially, and emotionally aware.

Vision Statement

Our vision is for all children to reach their full potential as collaborative and independent learners by providing an education that nurtures their individuality while helping them grow into engaged citizens of the world.

Core Values

Our core values will be grounded in the Montessori philosophy and guide our community, programs, initiatives, and unique culture. They will reflect how we work inside and outside the organization to achieve our mission, vision, and goals.

  • Community – We promote community and cultural awareness in our classroom environments, and celebrate the diversity of our school and our greater community. We aim to immerse our students in the community through regular field trips, regional studies, and visits with local leaders, artisans and business people;

  • Joy of learning – We provide engaged, purposeful learning opportunities that promote a love of lifelong learning;

  • Respect – We value self-respect, mutual respect, respect for others, and respect for our environment. We provide a safe and nurturing environment that encourages the appreciation of joy and the wonderment of childhood;

  • Peace education – We cultivate each child’s ability to become peaceful, compassionate citizens and responsible stewards of the planet;

  • Independence and autonomy – We encourage and guide children to do things for themselves. By giving children opportunities, there is an increase in their self-belief, self-confidence, and self-esteem that they will carry with them throughout their life.
